Botswana 2008 - Day 17-20, Meno a Kwena english

Saturday, November 7, 2009

The day before we arrive in the afternoon in the camp Meno a Kwena which is located south from Maun at the Boteti river. The camp is located about 50 meters above the river bed. It operates two artificial water holes within the river bed. Since the water of the Boteti rarely arrives at Meno a Kwena, the water holes attract quite a lot zebras which reach during the dry season the Boteti and are getting stuck at the veterinary fence. Around 20.000 to 25.000 zebras are reaching this area.

The water hole an be observed either directly from the camp or from a hideout which is situated shortly above the water hole. The camp is designed in Hemingway style comprising 8 tents. The tents are large and extremely comfortable. Each one has a dedicated adjacent shower and toilet. To keep away unwanted guests it is surrounded by a wooden fence. The atmosphere in the camp is relaxed and extremely cozy. Really a place to relax and game watching.

We are out for game drives daily. I have never seen so many zebras on a single spot. Incredible! This is a feast for the lions. Twice we are out for a bush walk. To be honest, I am really feeling uneasy walking without protection of a car through the bush. Our guide Max assures us  that the lions fear humans since they were hunted in this area and adapted appropriately. On our last day Max statement is enforced. Early in the morning, I hear lions roaring. It sounds like they are being just across the river. It dawns already. Thus, I get up immediately, grab my camera and walk to the outlook were I can get a glimpse to the water hole. And indeed, three lioness are drinking. However, before I can even bring my camera in position, the lions spotted me and escaped.

A further highlight of our stay is our trip to the Nxai pan to Baines Baobab. In the middle of the endless salt pan an island of baobabs are growing. Really impressing!

After four fantastic nights we have to say good bye to Meno a Kwena and unfortunately to Botswana. We have to head back to Germany.
