Botswana 2008 - Day 14, Moremi english

Sunday, November 1, 2009

The whole night we hear elephants near our in the camp. Further to that, a hyena is rummaging our camp kitchen. Before we even could finish our breakfast Sammie is pointing out the impala calls near to our camp. He pushes us into the car and is heading off immediately towards were he heard the impalas. He suspects a predator somewhere in this area.  And indeed after 2 minutes drive Renates spots a leopard on a small hill.

We follow him and watch him crossing our camp.   All over sudden, we realize Sunday running towards our car.   Obviously unaware of the leopard he waves with a bag of milk which we forget to carry with us. Sammie is shouting at him to stop immediately, Sunday freezes now spotting the leopard which is crossing the road between our car and himself. The leopard is not taking any notice of Sunday, may be he doesn’t like milk :-).
After we brought back Sunday to the camp, we follow the leopard which is sneaking through the bush with upright tail. Finally, the leopard found a tree which it climbs. The leopard makes himself comfortable and is gazing around. After  watching him for half an hour we decide to continue our game drive. What a pity, I would have waited there longer.

On our after lunch game drive, we spot 6 young lions, two teens and 4 really young ones. We watch them how they are playing in the gras, obviously having a lot of fun. Sometimes their mother leave them alone for several days only marking the area to keep away the hyenas. We find the females and the males near the public campground, lying around lazily. Briefly after sunset the lions stand up instantly one after another. Slowly they trudge away and vanish in the bush. On our way back a surprise is waiting for us. A male lion is lying in the gras. After we spotted him, he gets up with a loud roar making clear who the boss is.
